Dorset, Devon and Somerset!

ACTHello all!
We’re on the road again slaying trolls as we go. Last night was the most amazing venue ever. The Roundhouse in the Ancient Technology Centre in Cambourne. Inside is a fire pit and we performed from the middle. No electricity meant the place was bathed in firelight and lanterns. We had to rig up a little tiny makeshift torch for Vicki so she could discern the different coloured keys on her harpa and Nick the red and black strings on his harp. (You can see it in the picture below if you look really hard!) Jonny was adamant that he did’t need to be able to see his fretboard. We did notice a couple of unusual jazz chords slip in though…

firelight

Playing in the firelight was a wonderful experience and Nick made the absolute most of being able to stride around the fire. It was the perfect place to slay trolls in and the audience was wonderful.  We wish that every performance could be like this one. We made a youtube video and as soon as we get enough bandwidth on tour we’ll upload it for you.

Tonight sees us in Exeter at the Barnfield Theatre. We shouldn’t have to worry about being able to see our instruments tonight. Tomorrow we get to drop off four nyckelharpas at Halsway Manor and then slay some more trolls at the Silver Street Sessions in Wiveliscombe. Then Vicki and Jonny continue on their tour down in Cornwall and Nick heads home again.

Come and say hej hej if you’re at one of these gigs!

Wiltshire Trolls Endangered!

20131006-121920.jpgHello!
We’re on tour; slaying trolls as we go. Bowerchalke Village Hall and Compton Bassett were lovely and it’s on to the Tobacco Theatre in Bristol tonight. One of things of being on the road is finding great places for coffee and cake. Yesterday we had our ‘fika’ in a converted church. A wonderful place; a

gargoyleplace for drinking coffee and also the village shop. All very modern and wonderful and you get to be greeted by gargoyles on the door as you enter.

The shop had been a life saver the night before as we hadn’t been organised enough to find our standard fayre of Chinese takeaway. So a swift trip to the shop meant we could forage enough rice, peas, ham and pineapple to make our own rice dish using the kitchen facilities at the village hall.

horseTo get from the south of the county up to the north of the county we passed through the fantastic chalk hills, although we didn’t stop we did manage to get a glimpse of a couple of white horses in the distance. Maybe next time we’re passing we’ll get up close and personal to one!

We passed a landmark last night. We sold the final copy of ‘on the mash’. We were sad to see it go, but glad it went to a good home.

As we were passing Corsham we dropped into Pound Arts for coffee and wifi. Nick headed off to Calne to find a swimming pool, rather energetic, but you do need to keep in shape to slay these trolls!  Bristol is this evening and we’re looking forward to it before heading home with another couple of scalps under our belt.
We hope to see you there, or somewhere else on the road!

End of our tour

celebratesMorning all!
(It feels like morning anyway!)  We’ve reached the end of our tour of the Whispering Road and we celebrated on our return last night with bubbly and chocolate.  (While Vicki did the housekeeping).  It’s been a wonderful month on the road and we’ve all had such fun!  The greatest thing though is that this isn’t actually the end!  We’re now planning our tours around the country, so hopefully if we didn’t come anywhere near you we now will be!  So if you missed us, or want us to come closer, now is the time to get in touch!  Send us a message, tell your local club or venue to send us a message!  Don’t be shy, we need to come and make sure your town is safe from trolls!

In the mean time you’ll find us next performing the show in Kent on Friday 8th March at Scandalmongers at The Tom Thumb Theatre.  It’s going to be a great night!  (There may also be a video blog being edited together, but we’ve had to rescue it from the mouth of the troll, so who knows what’s going to be on that camera!)

Time-lapse day

Hello!
We’ve been busy this week with both a photo shoot and a filming session.  This is all preparation for future tours.  It felt like a good idea to put this at the end of the tour, but  we’re all quite tired now from being on the road.  We’re waiting for the real pictures and footage to come back, but we put a little camera up at The High Barn and created a time-lapse movie.  The sound track is our diddle song.

We’ve only got two more dates left on this leg of our Whispering Road tour, so we’re a little bit sad, but also looking forward to a rest!

News from the #whisperingtour

Hoy at AnchorHello!
It’s been a long week with Vicki and Jonny playing in Kent, Hampshire, Gloucestershire and a show gig in the middle.  We’ve now slain 10 sets of trolls, with only another four left to go until the end of the tour.  It’ll be a very quiet kitchen next week! This evening saw us at the Hoy at Anchor Folk Club, where Vicki announcing that Abba was also a brand of sill (pickled) herring put everyone in the room into spasms of laughter, so that Jonny had to leave the room so Nick could sing his very serious love song – dedicated to Agneta from Abba (who went to the same school as Vicki’s mum) and not burst into laughter.  Vicki – wiping away tears of laughter looked earnestly at the floor.  We suspect Nick’s song tomorrow will be something completely different. Maybe The River….

It’s been a wonderful tour and we’re all very sad that it’s nearing its conclusion, but we do have our mystery event to look forward to.  We are revamping our publicity and are filming the show on Sunday at The High Barn in Great Bardfield.  It’s going to be a fun filled evening and starts nice and early at 6pm.  So come and be part of the phenomenon that is “The Whispering Road”.  We promise to try not to make too many herring based jokes…

Don’t forget to join us on twitter using the #whisperingtour tag. More news from the kitchen soon!

A full week of gigs…

seriouskitchen newspaper clippingHello!
It’s been a pretty mad week here in the kitchen. Not all troll slaying though.  Vicki & Jonny are in the middle of dashing around from Kent to Hampshire, then Wales and up to Gloucestershire before running back to Essex to run their Scandi Session at the Swan.  Nick had his own solo gig in Essex whilst they were away.  A couple of troll incantations were performed outside of the show, just to make sure that everyone was safe and protected!  The trolls are still falling thick and fast, but there are plenty yet to find!  Colchester, Southend and Ely next week. (Once V&J are back again!)  We’ve had a piece published in the local papers (we think you’ll find it in Colchester and Southend and we picked up a copy from our local paper, scanned it and have put it up here for you, click on the thumbnail picture to read the contents!

Days 5, 6 and 7

TrollTourHello!
It’s been a hectic few days, playing in Hertfordshire, Suffolk and London.  We also took some time out to celebrate Nick’s birthday, chocolate brownie cake, candles and singing.  We’ve not seen much of the mornings but what little has been seen has been filled with a little bit of ironing, washing up, Jonny has put up new outside lights, Vicki has been tapping away at the computer and squeaking away at the pipes putting together a new bagpipe book and Nick has been doing something in his room beginning with Z (but not sleeping, not that sort of Z).

We’ve had such a great response to the show everywhere we go we keep hearing the words: Stunning – Amazing – Magnificent – we want to see it again!  So we’ve added a scrolling testimonial section on the front of our website.  Feel free to sent us in your quote from the show and we’ll add it to the pile!  We love them all.  Vi hade några Svensk i publiken igår kväll – hej tjejer!  Det var jätte kul att höra ni skratta innan Nick översätt vad jag sa på Svensk!  Kul att träffas!

We’ve also been slightly aware of being followed, it’s been very strange, but something is definitely out there stalking our movements.  We’ve tried to capture this feeling on film, so that’s todays picture…

We’re at The Torriano Meeting House tonight hoping for an audience full of storytellers and maybe another Swede or two…

Rest Day

everymanHello!
We’ve had some more pictures, this one is from The Everyman Folk Club last Friday.  Today was a rest day and it’s given us time to do a bit of house work, answer emails, play some bagpipes and listen to our recordings from BBC Radio Suffolk last week.  You can catch them online for the next few days:

Friday played Millworker from our album on the mash
Monday was our bagpipe didling song at around
Tuesday was Nick singing The First Time I Saw Your Face
Wednesday was an interview with us and The Blacksmith
Tomorrow will be the final track we recorded which was Jonny and Vicki singing Broken Token.

We’re off to Stortfolk in Bishop’s Stortford tomorrow, Bury St Edmunds on Friday and Torriano Story Night in London on Saturday to round up National Storytelling Week!

More tomorrow!

Day 3 in the #whisperingtour car

WalthamstowHello!
Day three in the #whisperingtour car took us southwards to Walthamstow. The venue is amazing, the upstairs theatre room in a pub. You’d not expect such a theatre in a pub, staging, lights, total black out. A really wonderful place. We got to try out the headset mics for the first time in situ and they were great, lovely to get away from a static mic stand. A highlight for me (Vicki) was meeting a brand new nyckelharpa player. There are so few of us that’s it’s really cool to meet new people!
More soon!

Day 2 in the #whispering tour car

Off to the Granary Theatre in Norfolk

Off to the Granary Theatre in Norfolk

Hello!
Day two was fun.  The promised snow never really arrived so we had a lovely drive through the Suffolk and Norfolk Countryside.  Jonny is amazing at packing the car, I have no idea how he fits everything in, but three guitar cases, harp, accordion and nyckelharpa all go in along with three people.  The views of the countryside were lovely as we drove further north.  Lunch and a crossword at the the Beach Cafe in Wells-next-the-Sea.  The Granary Theatre is a lovely little 80 seater venue, tucked away.  A very intimate place with a wonderful atmosphere.  Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.  After the performance it had started to rain and all the pretty snow had gone, which was both a shame and also a relief! We’re down south tomorrow in Walthamstow.  See you there!

Day 1 in the #whisperingtour car

Recording for Drive Time at BBC Radio Suffolk

Recording for Drive Time at BBC Radio Suffolk

Hello everyone!
Day 1 was full on packed. We headed up to the BBC Suffolk radio station to record some tracks and an interview to be played on drive time over the next week. We last played here many many years ago for the old folk show. Good memories! With some time to kill we lunched at a local cafe before heading up to Saxmundham and the wonderful Everyman Folk Club. The new venue was packed out and the atmosphere was wonderful. A really, really great place for our first night.
We’re tweeting live from our twitter account @seriouskitchen3 with the hash tag #whisperingtour so join in the conversation!
I’ll add photos to this post later, we’re on the road up to Norfolk and Wells-next-the-Sea as I type with one finger on my iPhone from the back of the car!

The Tour Starts Today!

Morning!
The tour starts today!  Hurrah, Vicki & Jonny had a little warm up gig last night at the Loughton Folk Club to limber up with. Which was a lovely little club in the upstairs room of the Loughton club.  Lots of varied floor spots, tunes, chorus songs even a comedian.  A lovely way to begin our month of gigs.  We’re watching the snow front come in, but we’re confident we’ll get to the gig ok.  We’ll pack ski jackets and a snow shovel.  Any snow shouldn’t hit until after the show tonight, so no reason to panic. Being in the South East we’re hoping that the clouds will be snowed out by the time it reaches over here.  We’re heading off this morning up to BBC Radio Suffolk before heading on up to the Everyman Folk Club in Suffolk.

Watch this space for daily diary updates and photographs.  In the meantime watch out for trolls!

8 Days to go

Eight days and counting!  We’ve ordered up some wintery weather for this week to get everyone in the mood for for a story from the frozen north, but we’re hoping not too much so that it hasn’t got time to melt again!  In the meantime here is our press release from our previews in Cumria.
